Dibrugarh: The "Caddie Golf Championship 2025," under the aegis of TEA VISION in collaboration with Upper Assam Golf Association and Dibrugarh & District Planters' Club, concluded on Sunday at Dibrugarh. A total of 93 caddies participated in this exciting annual tournament, where tea workers from Assam's tea plantations showcased their golfing talents. The event, held at the Dibrugarh & District Planters' Club (D&DPC), was a resounding success, celebrating both sport and community.
The tournament, organized in collaboration with Tea Vision (a Kolkata-based NGO) , Sentinel Daily and the Upper Assam Golf Association (UAGA), continues D&DPC’s legacy of hosting caddy golf events, which have become an important fixture in the region’s golf calendar. The club has long supported tea workers in developing their golfing skills, and this year’s event further strengthened that commitment.
Tea Vision’s Role in Supporting Tea Workers : Tea Vision, a Kolkata-based NGO, played a key role in the tournament, supporting the development of tea workers by promoting opportunities in sports and recreation. As part of its broader mission to improve the lives of tea workers and ensure the sustainability of the tea industry, Tea Vision partners with organizations like D&DPC and UAGA to open new avenues for personal growth.
A Legacy of Tea and Golf in Upper Assam : For over fifty years, D&DPC and UAGA have been champions of golf in Upper Assam, blending the region’s rich tea heritage with the sport. With nine golf courses spread across the region, the UAGA has organized numerous tournaments, including the beloved caddy golf event, which gives tea workers the platform to showcase their golfing skills.
Sustainability of Golf Courses in Assam: In addition to supporting the sport, the sustainability of Assam’s golf courses has become a priority to sustain these courses in all aspects. Local golf clubs and the UAGA are adopting eco-friendly practices to preserve the natural beauty of these courses. These efforts ensure that Assam’s golf courses continue to thrive while maintaining environmental responsibility.
A Vision for the Future: ‘‘We believe that with the right infrastructure and support, Assam has the potential to produce professional golfers who can compete at national and international levels,’’ said UAGA representative S. J. Chaliha, Abrar H. Choudhury, Convener of the Event, added, “By providing opportunities to underprivileged communities, especially tea garden workers, we hope to open pathways for them to pursue careers in the sport.”
Celebrating Achievement and Community: Following the tournament, participants and attendees gathered for a lunch and prize distribution ceremony, celebrating the success of the day and the achievements of the players. The event not only provided an opportunity for tea workers to showcase their talents but also reinforced the sense of community within the region. During the prize distribution, Paban Singh Ghatowar, President of the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS), Bidyananda Borkotoky, Adviser NETA, Dr. Pankaj Borthakur, Register, Sports University of Assam, Jaydeep Baruah, Director of Assam Tea Broker, and other distinguished guests appreciated the combined effort by D&DPC, UAGA, and Tea Vision in providing this platform to the Tea Community.
As D&DPC, UAGA, Tea Vision, and Sentinel Daily continue to collaborate, the goal is clear: to nurture and support golf at the grassroots level, opening doors for aspiring golfers from all walks of life. With a strong foundation built on tradition, teamwork, and a shared vision, the future of golf in Assam looks brighter than ever.
