GUWAHATI: Top seed Grand Master Vasquez Schroeder Rodrigo of Chile is all set to clinch the champion’s title of the 3rd Guwahati India Open International Rating Chess Tournament. After the completion of the penultimate 9th round here today Rodrigo has scored 8.5 points and is in clear lead. A win in the last round will ensure the championship to him. On the other hand International Master (elect) Koustav Chatterjee in the second position with 8 points after 9 rounds. International Master Ramanathan Balasubramaniam, International Master Dhulipalla Bala Chandra Prasad, International Master Siddhant Mohapatra and Rajib Dhar of Assam are all in the third position with 7 points each. Local boy Shahil Dey caused a major upset in the 9th round when he drew his match against International Master Siddhant Mohapatra in 37 moves. With this result, Shahil has scored 7 points and moved to a joint 3rd position. A victory in the final round will ensure him a podium finish.
