GUWAHATI: A terrific spell from Akash Sengupta (5-20) guided Assam to register their first victory of the season in the Vijay Hazare Cricket at Chandigarh today. Assam, placed in group ‘D’, beat Andhra by five wickets. Chasing 113 to win Assam reached the target in 24.2 overs with five wickets in hand. Assam went into the ground without the service of captain Riyan Parag as the star batter missed the game due to injury. In Riyan’s absence Sibsankar Roy led the team and he decided to invite Andhra to bat first after winning the toss.

Assam bowlers proved captain’s decision right as they bowled out entire Andhra in paltry 112 (31.5 overs) even though their openers Hanuma Behari (23) and Ashwin Hebber (50) gave good start putting 51 runs on the opening partnership. Once Akash Sengupta broke the partnership removing Hanuma, Assam came back strongly in the game. Andhra lost the remaining nine wickets on way to add just 61 runs on the board. Akash was too good to handle and the bowler picked up 5-20 in the game bowling just 5.5 overs.

Assam also struggled during their run chase and were once 4-38. But a patient knock from Rishav Das (30 no, 64 balls 4X3) and support from Pallavkumar Das (20), Sibsankar Roy (23) and Saahil Jain (16 no) helped Assam to reach the target in 24.2 overs. With this win Assam collected four points from the game and are placed in third spot in the points table with 4 points. In the next match Assam will face Himachal on Wednesday.
