GUWAHATI: Assam faced a crushing eight-wicket defeat to Gujarat in the Vijay Hazare Trophy match held in Jaipur on Thursday. This is Assam’s second loss in the tournament.
After being invited to bat first, Assam’s batting lineup crumbled, managing a mere 75 runs in 19.1 overs. Only two batters, opener Sarupam Purkayastha (15) and Mukhtar Hussain (19 not out), reached double figures.
The innings, though, started on a positive note with an opening partnership of 22 runs between Sarupam Purkayastha and Rishav Das. However, once the partnership was broken, the team collapsed, losing nine wickets on way to add just 53 runs on the board.
Chintan Gaja and Priyajitsing Jadeja spearheaded Gujarat’s bowling attack, taking five and four wickets, respectively, to dismantle Assam’s batting order.
Chasing the modest target, Gujarat secured victory in just 9.5 overs, losing only two wickets. Aarya Desai (28) and Urvil Patel (37) put together a solid opening stand of 67 runs, ensuring Assam had no chance to make a comeback in the game. Abdul Ajij Kuraishi and Akash Sengupta bagged one wicket each.
