GUWAHATI: Newly elected Rajya Sabha Member Birendra Prasad Baishya today said that Mary Kom and Mira Chanu are the two athletes from the North East who have good chances to win medal in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. At the same time he also added: “I want to see more number of athletes from the North East in Tokyo bound Indian team and I will feel great if sprinter Hima Das becomes one of them and bring medal from there.”

Baishya, who was recently elected as the MP of Rajya Sabha, today attended a felicitation function organized by the Assam Olympic Association at the AOA conference hall at RG Baruah Sports complex in the city. Several other State Sports Associations also felicitated Baishya in the same function.

Addressing the gathering Baishya, who would be the Chef de Mission of Indian team in Tokyo Olympics, today assured the local sports organizers that he would try his best to promote sports in Assam. “33rd National Games helped us to create modern sports infrastructure and these are now being used on regular basis to organize international events. Our sportsperson also get the opportunity to train on this modern infrastructure. I assure you that I would try my best to provide all possible helps to our sportspersons so that they can bring more and more laurels for the country,” said Baishya.

He also advised the officials of the Assam Olympic Association to organize the next Annual General Meeting quickly and constitute a good committee for the association.

Talking about the forthcoming Olympic Baishya said, “The world sports body now started to give huge importance to India. It would be the first occasion when India House would be open in Tokyo during Olympics.’

Apart from AOA joint secretary Anup Choudhury and treasurer Raj Kakoti the function was also attended by many sports organizers of different sports associations.
