GUWAHATI: The 2nd North East Olympic Games got under way in a colourful ceremony in Shillong today. Around 3000 athletes from all around the North East states are competing in 18 disciplines at 12 venues spread across Shillong.

The opening ceremony was held at the SAI Training Centre in NEHU campus where a good number of crowds turned out to watch the opening ceremony.

Assam sent a huge team of 363 athletes in this edition of the Games. Promising boxer Imdad Hussain, who won multiple medals in Khelo India Youth Games, carried the State flag in the team's march past which was also attended by the star sprinter Hima Das and chef de mission of the team Tapan Kumar Das.

Meanwhile both the men and women team of Assam registered victories in the basketball event. In the mens section Assam defeated Manipur in a well contested tie and the women's team won against Tripura.
