GUWAHATI: The torch Relay of first-ever Chess Olympiad will arrive in Guwahati on July 10. Grandmaster Mitrabha Guha will carry the torch to the city.

The 44th edition of the FIDE Olympiad will kick off in Chennai from July 28 and players from 187 countries will participate in the tournament. It will be the first occasion when India will host this prestigious tournament.

Addressing a media gathering Nibedan Das Patowary, Director, Sports and Youth Welfare Department of Assam said that a brief function will be held on July 10 to mark the occasion and minister Bimal Borah will attend it which will be held at Sarusajai Stadium from 11-30 AM. The function will be jointly hosted by All Assam Chess Association and Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare. Grandmaster Mitrabha Guha will also participate in simultaneous chess with the young players in the same event.

Among others present in the media briefing were president and secretary of the All Assam Chess Association Kandarpa Kalita and Rajib Dhar respectively. The torch will also travel to Dibrugarh on July 13.
