
NEW DELHI: PSV Eindhoven snatched the Dutch league title on a thrilling final day in the Eredivisie, capitalising on a stunning late-season collapse by previous league leader Ajax, which squandered a commanding nine-point lead.
Peter Bosz’s side led Ajax by one point going into the final match day, with PSV away to 11th-place Sparta Rotterdam and the Amsterdam side hosting FC Twente.
Luuk de Jong and Malik Tillman scored second-half goals to help retain the league title for PSV in a nervous 3-1 victory at Rotterdam.
It dramatic conclusion to the league season in Netherlands, which had seen Ajax collect just two points in the space of four games to squander the league and ensure PSV clinched back-to-back titles.
Last season. PSV lifted the title with a tally to 91 points, however, the historic Eindhoven club finished the season with 79 points from 34 games, one ahead of its great rival from Amsterdam. Ivan Perisic put PSV ahead after 27 minutes, but when Gjivai Zechiel equalised for Sparta, Ajax took over at the top of the table as it went on to win 2-0 at home to FC Twente.
But De Jong restored PSV’s lead after 58th minutes, and when Tillman rifled in a third from the edge of the box with six minutes remaining, the visitor was able to celebrate its seventh win in a row and claiming the league championship.
At 61 years and 178 days, PSV coach Peter Bosz is the oldest manager to win the Dutch league. Agencies
