BUENOS AIRES: River Plate scored four second-half goals to secure the Argentine Super Cup on Thursday with a 5-0 defeat of Racing Club.

Colombian striker Rafael Borre struck in the 31st minute before Julian Alvarez, Nicolas de la Cruz, Matias Suarez, and Leonel Miranda's own goal completed the rout.

"You don't play in finals every day and this challenge has come along at the beginning of the season. But the team managed to play at a high level. The players deserve this," River manager Marcelo Gallardo said.

The result at the new Madre de Cities stadium, in the northern city of Santiago del Estero, marked River's second Super Copa crown in the trophy's eight-year history.

The competition pits the winner of the previous year's league title against the reigning Copa Argentina champions.

Thursday's clash had been postponed by a year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Agencies
