Itanagar: The Li-Ning 12th Dorjee Khandu memorial state badminton championship began on Saturday at the Khelo India indoor stadium here, bringing together over 500 shuttlers from all 28 districts of Arunachal Pradesh.
Players from Sangay Lhaden Sports Academy and Rajiv Gandhi University Sports Control Board are also participating in the sporting extravaganza.
The week-long event, which would culminate on August 13, will see intense competition across multiple age categories, with winners earning a chance to represent the state at the national level.
Hosted by the Arunachal State Badminton Association (ASBA) under the aegis of the Badminton Association of India and in collaboration with the state sports department, the championship honours the legacy of former Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu, a staunch supporter of sports development in the state.
Inaugurating the tournament, Tezu lawmaker Dr Mohesh Chai, praised the athletes’ dedication and urged youth to pursue sports with passion and discipline.
Nampong MLA Laisam Simai, who also spoke at the inaugural function, commended the growing badminton culture in the state and lauded efforts to provide a strong competitive platform for emerging talents.
The event promises a showcase of skill, sportsmanship, and inspiration for the next generation of shuttlers.
