India's ace tennis player Sania Mirza has opened up about her fight with depression at a young age after having to retire from the 2008 Beijing Olympics due to a wrist injury. She expressed that she had a hard time getting back to normal. She was playing against Iveta Benesova from the Czech Republic in the first round in the 2008 Olympics.

Initially, she was trailing in the game but the wrist injury had made it worse for her, and as she had to discontinue playing and retire. Sania Mirza had completely lost hope and she said that it was too much for a 20-year-old to bear the pain of not getting to do what she loved to do. She further added that she is a control freak and it was difficult for her to read that her career is finished and that she would not be able to compete in Olympics ever again. This had been quite disturbing for her.

Talking about her experiences Sania said, "I went to depression for 3-4 months and after that, I remember crying for no Freson. I would be absolutely fine and then I would burst into tears. I remember not coming out of my room to even eat a meal for over a month".

Her injury was grave and she had lost complete movement of her wrist. Mirza revealed that her injury was so bad that she couldn't even comb her hair and right after her injury, it worsened. She says, " I felt like I had let my family and country down". Read more

At the age of 34, Mirza has a clearer mind than she had at 20. She further said that most of us rely on our respective careers to bring happiness into our lives and we tend to forget that it's not our life but just a part of our lives.

Mirza won two medals later at the Commonwealth Games that happened in India with her family's help and support. She has been one of India's most popular woman sports stars and has won a total of 14 medals, out of which 6 are gold. She has won in 3 major sports events: the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and Afro-Asian Games. She was also honored with the prestigious Padmashree Award.
