Canberra: India captain Virat Kohli on Wednesday has broken Sachin Tendulkar's record for the fastest to 12,000 runs in the 50-over format of the game during the third and final match against Australia at the Manuka Oval, Canberra.

Virat Kohli was playing his 251st ODI and in this format, he averaged 60, with 43 centuries and 59 half-centuries. He became the fastest cricketer to score 12,000 ODI runs. He needed 23 runs to get to the landmark and he had no trouble reaching the milestone in his 251st ODI.

Kohli got to the milestone in his 242nd inning by breaking the previous record set by Sachin Tendulkar who completed his 12000th run in his 300th inning.He reached 11,000 runs in 222 innings and became the fastest to breach the 10000-run mark by doing so in his 205th inning.

While Sachin had reached this figure in 493 innings, Virat Kohli played 462 innings to reach here.

In 2008 Captain Virat Kohli made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka and has hit 43 ODI centuries in addition to 59 fifties in his 12 years of career. He has played 418 international matches while Sachin had crossed the 21 thousand mark in his 418 international matches.

The most recent of his half-centuries came in the second ODI against Australia in Sydney where he hit 89 in India's chase of 390 runs. Although Australia defeated the Indian team by 51 runs in the second ODI of the series. And with this defeat, the team captained by Virat Kohli also lost the 3-match series.

Australia won the first ODI by 66 runs.
