Assam Lad Amlan Borgohain Sets New 100m National Record

Guwahati: Ace sprinter Amlan Borgohain, on Monday, set a new national record in men's100m sprint at the All India Inter Railways Athletics Championships in Raebareli.

Amlan shaved off almost 0.09 seconds from his previous 100m best of 10.34 seconds and also broke the record set by Amiya Kumar Mallick in 2016.

Taking to the micro-blogging site Twitter, the Northeast Frontier Railway said, ''Sri Amlan Borgohain of N.F. Railway @RailMinIndia won the Gold medal in the 100m run in the 87 AIR Athletics championship being held at Raebareli. He also broke the National record by clocking 10.25sec (the earlier National record was 10.26sec in 2016)."

Borgohain, who gets training at the Reliance High-Performance Center in Odisha, also holds a national record of 200 meters against his name. He made this record by taking 20.52 seconds in the 25th National Federation Cup held earlier this year.

Reportedly, Borgohain was a fan of football and their idols were Cristiano Ronaldo and Sunil Chhetri. However, often he used to get injured following which her mother suggested to opt other sports.

After this, he took up athletics, and in 2019, during a tournament, he came on notice of James Hillier the head coach of High-Performance Athletics Centre in Bhubaneshwar, and since then, there was no looking back.

In June this year, the Assam Athletics Association (AAA) had announced to the provision of financial assistance to sprinters Hima Das and Amlan Borgohain.

This was stated by the Vice President of the Sports Authority of Assam and General Secretary of the Assam Olympic Association, Lakhya Konwar said that they will provide Rs 1 lakh to Hima Das and Rs 50 lakh will be given to Amlan Borgohain.

The Assam Olympic Association and Guwahati Sports Association will organize a marathon run on June 23.

It may be mentioned that Hima Das will represent India in the 4×100m relay at the Commonwealth Games.

Earlier, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma gave Rs 5 lakh to athlete Amlan Borgohain to help him better prepare for the upcoming 2022 Asian Games slated to be held in Hangzhou.
