New Delhi: India clinched a sixth gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 as para-power lifter Sudhir finished on top in the men's heavyweight category final.

Sudhir, who is also an Asian Para Games bronze medallist in 2018, lifted 208kg in his first attempt before increasing it to 212kg in his second effort to gather 134.5 points and break the game's record.

He defeated Nigeria's Ikechukwu Obichukwu (133.6 points) by 0.9 points in the Men's Heavyweight final.

Notably, in his third lift, he attempted to lift 217 kg, however, he was not successful.

With this gold medal of Sudhir, India's medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 now stands at 20.

In addition to this, Murali Shreeshankar won a historic silver medal earlier on Thursday in Men's long jump to add to the six silver medals India had won previously, while the Indian contingent has also won seven bronze medals till date.

Sudhir is currently working as a Senior Coach (Weightlifting) for the Government of Haryana.

He was also named "Strong Man of India" at the 17th Senior and 12th Junior National Para Powerlifting Championships in 2018.

Notably, the Indian men's hockey team also had a good outing, with Harmanpreet Singh's hat-trick helping them register a 4-1 win over Wales in the Pool B match.

The win saw them seal a spot in the semi-finals. Earlier, boxers Amit Panghal, Jaismine Lamboriya, and Sagar Ahlawat assured India of at least three bronze medals with wins in men's flyweight, women's lightweight, and men's super heavyweight quarter-finals.

In athletics, Hima Das entered the semi-finals of the women's 200m while Manju Bala entered the final of the women's hammer throw event. Shuttlers PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth won their respective badminton singles Round of 32 matches.
