Mirabai Chanu Wins Silver Medal Despite Wrist Injury: World Championship

Mirabai Chanu was competing in the 49 kg division and was able to snatch and clean and jerk 87 kg.

IMPHAL: Mirabai Chanu won a silver medal with a total of 200kg in the World Championship on December 6 despite suffering a wrist injury.

She was competing in the 49 kg division and was able to snatch and clean and jerk 87 kg.

After winning her third medal and a second gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, former world champion Chanu was making her competition debut.

She sustained a wrist injury, which required some time away from the game.

She lagged behind a number of veteran players but has since made a great recovery, managing to take home a silver medal.

The bronze medal went to Olympic champion Hou Zhihua, who competed at 198 kg (89 kg+109 kg).

In the end, Mirabai earned valuable points for the silver medal that will help her in the final qualification standings as she prepares for the 2023 World Championship and 2024 World Cup, which will take place the following year.

A weightlifter must compete in both the 2023 World Championships and the 2024 World Cup in order to qualify for the 2024 Olympics. The weightlifter must compete in three other events in addition to these.

Jeremy Lalrinnunga, the first Youth Olympic champion of India, was hurt during his gold-medal-winning performance at the Commonwealth Games in July and is not competing in the competition.

Sanket Mahadev Sargar, a silver medallist at the Commonwealth Games, is unable to compete due to an elbow injury that required surgery.

During a training session in September, Chanu, the 2017 world champion, injured her wrist. She got the injury in October and had also competed in the National Games.

"We were limited in our ability to address the injury since we didn't want to miss the World Championships. We will concentrate on her wrist right now because there is still a lot of time before the next event, "said coach Vijay Sharma.

The majority of lifters avoided extending themselves despite the 11-lifter field's intense competition. Even Zhihua skipped her last clean-and-jerk attempt to accept bronze.
