GUWAHATI: Legendary footballer Bhaichung Bhutia said that All India Football Federation (AIFF) should introduce a quality grass root level development programme across the country. He felt that it was necessary for the development of young footballers of the country.

Former international was in the city to participate in the award function of the 6th Sunfeast Cup Football tournament which concluded at the SAI Field ground here today.

Talking to the media person at the sideline of the award function Bhaichung said, "The new committee of the Federation recently took charge and they are expecting to announce their plans in detail soon. I hope the new committee will chalk out some plans for the development of grass root soccer which I feel is very essential for the development of football in the country."

He is also in favour of taking some strong steps to remove the menace of age fraud from the football arena. Talking on this issue the former captain of India said, "It's really a bad habit and doesn't allow the promising footballers to display their talent."

Earlier Bhutia planned to promote a team from Guwahati in the I-League football. But it did not occur. When the point was raised Bhutia said, "It's true. But due to the COVID pandemic, I was not able to materialize the plan. I am really surprised to see that there is no team from Assam in the I-League. I shall be happy to help the local organizer in this regard."

Nearly 2,700 young footballers of the region took part in the 6th edition of Sunfeast Cup Football. Bhaichung today presented the winning Manipur Marshals (U-13) and Manipur Marshals (U-16) team with the prestigious Sunfeast Cup trophy. The U-13 final was contested between Meghalaya Masters and Manipur Marshals.
