The State Government created the Irrigation department under the Flood control and Irrigation Ministry and all the works pertaining to Water Resources were executed by the F.C & Irrigation Department. The importance of irrigation was felt by the Government of Assam during seventies and separate Irrigation Department was created in the year 1974 bifurcating it from the erstwhile Department.
Irrigation Department initiated its independent functioning in the year 1974. The main service of the department is to supply water to the crop field as per demand of the cultivators and as per requirement with a view to delivering the service to the citizen/cultivators.
