1951 Can’t Be Cut-off Year for NRC: Former CM Tarun Gogoi

GUWAHATI: Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has termed as ‘impractical’ the resolution taken by the Citizens’ Convention that 1951 should be taken as the base year for NRC. The conference was organized by the Loka Jagaran Mancha, Asom on Sunday.

Addressing a press conference at his official residence at Dispur on Monday, Gogoi said: “The 1951 NRC is not available in some areas in the State; hence the suggestion to take 1951 as the base year for NRC update isn’t practical. On the contrary, the Assam Accord’s cut-off date – March 25, 1971 – has been accepted by all; and the NRC has been also updated based on that cut-off date. However, a large number of Indians have been dropped from the NRC. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) should form a review committee to include all those Indians who have been dropped from the NRC.”

Meanwhile, Tarun Gogoi demanded a white paper from the State government stating as to how many foreigners have been deported from the State since the Sarbananda Sonowal-led BJP government came to power at Dispur.
