2,55,376 cases pending in courts across Assam

BY OUR STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Aug 12: At a time when the Central Government is putting stress on quick disposal of cases pending in different courts across the country, a total of 25,943 cases (excluding bail applications and miscellaneous cases) as on June 30, 2016 are pending in Gauhati High Court. This was informed by State Minister (Independent) for Sports and Youth Welfare ba Kumar Doley on behalf of State Law Minister in reply to a question raised by AGP MLA Pabindra Deka in the House on Friday.

Doley further stated that 14 cases pending for 15 to 20 years in Gauhati High Court are yet to be disposed of. In other lower courts across the State, 2,55,376 cases as on June 30, 2016 are pending and 471 cases pending for 15 to 20 years have not yet been disposed of.

Some of the reasons for slow disposal of cases, according to the Minister, were delay in filing of charge-sheet, non-presence of witness during hearing, death of party/parties involved in the case, etc.
