Land revenue default

Guwahati, April 24: Orders have been issued to attach the properties of three tea estates of Sonitpur district following default in payment of land revenue.

“In spite of notices issued from time to time for payment of land revenue, three tea estates – mely Ghagra tea estate, Panbari tea estate and Singri tea estate of Tezpur sub division are yet to pay their land revenue since the year 2011-12. The tea estates are yet to pay revenue of Rs 6,46,026, Rs 3,84,621 and Rs 3,20,888 respectively,” Additiol Deputy Commissioner Mukul Saikia said.

Invoking the Assam Land Revenue Regulation, 1886, the administration has issued orders to attach the movable properties of the defaulting tea estates.

Official sources said that steps have been taken to attach properties of other defaulting tea estates in the district.

The development comes on the back of the government registering cases against tea estates for not adhering to the Plantation Labour Act. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Thursday said that 31 cases have been registered against tea gardens for not implementing the labour laws.

At the fag end of his three-term tenure, Gogoi has upped the ante against tea estate magements on various issues, apparently in a bid to appease tea voters ahead of the 2016 Assembly elections.
