7 hurt in Army firing

DIPHU/ HOWRAGHAT, April 10: Army personnel today opened fire at Dokmoka in Karbi Anglong to disperse an agitated mob protesting alleged gangrape of local women by the men in uniform. Seven protestors were injured. Two of them received bullet injuries.

The agitated mob had gheraoed the army camp at Dokmoka PWD Colony,

protesting the alleged rape of three women by some army personnel at Sarthey Tokbi village under Dokmoka police station on the morning of April 6.

The police has already registered a case, while the army has also instituted its own inquiry.

When the protests today went out of control, the army personnel opened fire to quell the angry mob. Two students – Kabita Marak and Pratap Rongpi - received bullet injuries, while five others were also injured in the ensuing stampede.

Meanwhile, 11 organizations including the Karbi Students Association, KNCA, KSYC, AIK and BJP Mahila Morcha have called a 24-hour Karbi Anglong bandh tomorrow, protesting the incident.
