782 tea estates to be electrified

Guwahati, July 29:  Assam's Power department will introduce a slew of measures in the coming days, including abolishment of age-old practices of the bygone British era, introduction of consumer friendly methods and best practices, transparency in all matters relating to generation, distribution and transmission as part of a major overhaul of image, an official statement said today.

Minister Rakibul Hussain, who took over additiol charge of the Power department, today reviewed the power scerio in the State and discussed threadbare ways and means to improve power generation and distribution in the State.

It was decided that 782 tea estates of the State will be electrified and installation of separate meters for every household will be completed in a phased manner on a priority basis, benefitting those residing in the tea estates.

Free electricity connection has also been provided to 75 lakh households in the State so far and the numbers will grow in the days to come, he said.

The minister suggested that distribution of power transformers of 100/200 KVA to every constituency of the state will be taken up as a new entity with 30 units in the first phase to every constituency.
