AASU: We have full confidence on Supreme Court, Hearing on Pleas against CAA today

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: Two senior advocates of the Supreme Court, on Wednesday, will argue in favour of the plea filed by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)-2019 in the apex Court.

AASU president Dipanko Kumar Nath, presently camping in New Delhi, told The Sentinel, “From tomorrow, our legal battle will commence against CAA-2019. We have full confidence on the Supreme Court. We hope that the apex Court will give justice to the people of Assam.

“We’re also hopeful that the Supreme Court will view the issue of the Northeast separately from the all-India context. Assam has already taken the burden of foreigners — irrespective of all religions — who had entered the State up to March 25, 1971. Now, Assam cannot take the additional burden of foreigners up to 2014 as stipulated in CAA-2019.”

The AASU leader added, “Our plea has two main issues. First, we seek a stay on the enforcement of the new Citizenship Act. This is especially because there is a possibility of the migrants already getting Indian citizenship if the CAA gets implemented by the government. Second, the AASU is seeking total abrogation of the Act.”
