AASU Will Help Indigenous People: General Secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi on Monday asserted that the students’ body will extend all possible help including legal expertise to get names of indigenous people included in the final NRC.

The AASU leader’s assertion has come following media reports and information from various other sources that names of many indigenous people were excluded in the final NRC published on August 31.

“If names of indigenous people are not included in NRC, then whose names will you include? We have information that indigenous people from many remote and interior areas of the State did not apply to enroll their names in the NRC. But names of such indigenous people must now be included in the final NRC,” Lurinjyoti Gogoi said.

He said the AASU will extend legal aid to all the originally inhabitant people (those excluded from the final NRC as well those did not apply for NRC).

“Since the NRC was solely a Supreme Court-monitored exercise, the apex court will definitely make an observation on non-inclusion of indigenous people in the NRC. We have full faith in SC,” Gogoi said.

Gogoi added that the AASU is having consultations with legal experts to file a petition in the Supreme Court seeking remedial measures for the final NRC as the students’ organization is not happy with the exclusion figure.
