GUWAHATI, July 29: About 62,041 cases are pending for investigation in different police stations across Assam. With so many cases pending in various police stations, the State Police have their task cut out. The slow disposal of pending cases is also delaying the delivery of justice in the State.

The phrase 'justice delayed is justice denied' fits well in the context of the State Police which have so far failed to dispose of high number of pending cases in quick intervals. In the last few years, number of pending cases in police stations across the State has increased manifold, but the solution is nowhere near to be seen. Unfortutely, the Assam Police haven't taken this issue very seriously so far.

However, police sources said it needs help of the State Government as many as 11,782 posts at different levels in the State Police are now lying vacant, which makes it very difficult for the police to dispose of so many cases within short period.

Out of 11,782 vacant posts, the process of filling of 4,076 posts has been started by the State Government. According to reports available, maximum cases of 17,981 are pending in police districts of Guwahati city with Dispur police station recording 6,293 cases. Minimum cases are pending in Sialmari police station in lbari district and in Bodatighat police station in Lakhimpur district, recording one case and two cases respectively.
