Guwahati, Feb 19: Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today asked deputy commissioners and superintendents of police to investigate into reports that people were submitting fake documents to enroll themselves in the NRC.
“If anyone is found guilty, strict action should be taken against them,” Gogoi said in his instruction.
The Chief Minister’s directive came a day after galand Governor PB Acharya (who is also holding additiol charge of Assam) directed the galand Chief Secretary and the State’s Home Commissioner to take action against galand government officials issuing birth certificates to people from outside the State.
The galand Chief Secretary has been directed by the Supreme Court to follow strictly the legal guidelines in issuing birth certificates, after it emerged that applicants were submitting documents issued in galand to get themselves enrolled in the NRC.
It was earlier reported that districts like gaon, Barpeta, Morigaon and Karimganj of Assam have many applicants whose birth certificates were issued in galand.
The State Coorditor for the updating of the NRC, Prateek Hajela has admitted that so far a “substantial number” of forged or fake documents have been detected, which proves that undeserving persons were making fraudulent attempts to get their mes included in the NRC. A large number of these documents are birth certificates (many issued in galand) and certificates purported to have been issued by the Board of Secondary Education, Assam.
