Agomoni boils over, curfew clamped

DHUBRI, Sept 26: Curfew was clamped in Agomoni of Dhubri district following sporadic incidents of violence in the wake of commul tension triggered after body parts of a cow were allegedly found in the premises of Sannyashi temple located at Kaldoba along the Indo-Bangladesh border on Friday evening.

Indefinite curfew was clamped in all areas under Agomoni police station from 1 pm on Saturday. The district administration also promulgated prohibitory orders throughout the district.

The police had a tough time as a large number of irate locals took to the streets at Agomoni and Kaldoba. Tension mounted following rumours that two persons - Jahangir Alam (28) and Noor Islam (26) -   arrested on charges of dumping the cow parts, had died in custody.

The situation took an ugly turn when some miscreants destroyed around ten to twelve business establishments and houses, demanding arrest of the culprits.

The police, however, arrested 21 persons allegedly involved in the incident.

IGP (law and order) SN Singh rushed to Dhubri and is monitoring the situation.
