AGP stages strength show before panchayat polls

I shall not take even a second to renounce my post as minister at Dispur in the greater interest of my party and the people of the State

Guwahati, April 5: At a massive rally organized by the AGP at the Khapara playground in the city on Thursday, the regiol party said it will not make any compromise on the regiol issues of the State and is strongly opposed to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 that tries to accord citizenship to Hindu Bengali migrants from Bangladesh on the grounds of their religion-based persecution in that country.

In a major show of strength, the party said it will go alone in the ensuing panchayat elections in the State despite it being a partner in the ruling dispensation at Dispur.

Party president Atul Bora made it categorical that his party is strongly opposed to the Centre’s move to accord citizenship to Hindu Bengalis from Bangladesh and that if anyone has doubts on the matter just because the party is a partner in the BJP-led government in the State, such doubts are misplaced.

“I shall not take even a second to renounce my post as minister at Dispur in the greater interest of my party and the people of the State. Let the Prime Minister take a stand in favour of the people of the State rather than take a stand in favour of Hindu Bangladeshis. At the same time, the Brahmaputra must also be treated in the same manner as the Ganga is, and we are also strongly opposed to any mega dam project in this region. Also, ST status should be given to the six communities of the State who are agitating for such status for a long time,” Bora said.

Former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said it is the AGP alone that can protect the rights of the indigenous people of the State. “The jaati, maati and bheti of the Assamese people can be made secure only by the AGP. The Congress had destroyed the entire administrative machinery of the State when it was in power. It was only to defeat the Congress that the AGP had extended its hands of friendship to the BJP, while at the same time the BJP had promised the people of implementing the Assam Accord in totality,” he said.

The rally was organized as a run-up exercise to the ensuing panchayat polls in the State and was attended by booth-level party workers.

Several other top AGP leaders, including Brindaban Goswami, Phani Bhusan Choudhury, Keshab Mahanta, Dr Kamala Kalita and Ramendra rayan Kalita, spoke for the cause of the indigenous people of the State.
