Ajmal plays RS card, puts Congress on backfoot

‘AIUDF will support Abdul Muhib Mazumdar if Congress

makes him candidate’

Guwahati, Feb 22: Days after “offering 66 seats in Upper Assam” to the Congress in his proposed seat sharing plan with the party, Badruddin Ajmal today created a flutter again, offering his support to senior Congress leader Abdul Muhib Mazumdar if he contests the Rajya Sabha election.

The terms of two current Congress Rajya Sabha members from the State znin Faruque and Pankaj Bora will expire in April this year.

“If Abdul Muhib Mazumdar is made candidate for Rajya Sabha election, AIUDF will support Majumdar Sahab. Our party does not have enough MLAs to elect him…we propose that the Congress should make him a candidate. Majumdar Sahab has been a long standing member of Assam Jamiat and has been fighting for the rights of minorities for decades,” Ajmal said in a series of tweets.

Ajmal’s new-found affection for the Congress comes even as Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and other APCC leaders continue to target him at various public rallies.

Congress leaders have been charging the AIUDF with having forged a “secret poll pact” with the BJP.

Even the Chief Minister has accused the AIUDF of being “commul”, though “less than the BJP”.
