Another Gogoi grouse: No cold chain in NE

By Our Staff Reporter

Guwahati, May 29: Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has expressed displeasure over non-allotment of any cold chain in the Northeastern region.

Referring to a recent development where the Centre sanctioned 30 new cold chains under the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, he said the Northeast has been blatantly ignored in the initiative.  Gogoi pointed out that Assam is bestowed with rich tural resources and one of the areas that the State has a lot of potentiality is food processing. However, due to idequate cold storage facilities, farmers fail to get optimum post harvest benefits.

He said that with adequate investment and support from the Centre, the region could very well become an exporter of agri-horticultural products.  “Ignoring the Northeast for setting up a robust cold chain infrastructure reflects the Centre’s indifference towards the region,” Gogoi added.
