Guwahati, June 9: In a mysterious incident, an engineer was shot at by unknown miscreants at Kahilipara area of the city on Thursday morning.

Fifty-four year old Jatin Kumar Dhekial Phukan, an assistant engineer in the Testing & Commissioning division of APDCL, said he was hit by a bullet while he was travelling to his office this morning at around 10.15 am. Phukan is a resident of Nizarapar in Kahilipara.

"While I was riding my motorcycle, I felt something hit me on my back. It was painful and I almost fell down. The driver of a passing vehicle told me there were bloodstains on my back. I also felt dizzy. Somehow I maged to ride my bike to the GMCH after informing my wife and office. Only at the hospital did I find out that I had been hit by a bullet," Phukan told reporters at the hospital.

Doctors said Phukan will be operated upon tomorrow to remove the bullet.

Fortutely, the bullet did not hit any vital organ.

Phukan's wife Monjuri said the incident could be a fall-out of a land dispute involving her family. Though there were reports that the bullet which hit Phukan could be a stray bullet which was fired during practice at the Kahilipara-based 4th APBn, its commandant claimed that there was no firing practice at the battalion's ground today. Police were, however, tight-lipped and said investigation is on into the incident.
