GUWAHATI, Dec 13: The BJP in Assam has demanded legal action against Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and his immediate arrest for the glaring violation of the Anti-Tobacco Act that prohibits smoking in public places. The Saffron party says that the Congress can stoops to any low just to get power.

During the public rally of the party addressed by All India Congress Committee (AICC) vice president and MP Rahul Gandhi at Medhirtari under Jania Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC) in Barpata district on Saturday the ruling party in the State was caught on the wrong foot when it was distributing bidi and sada (tobacco) among the audience. Assam being among the States that are infamous for the occurrence of cancer, this activity on the part of the ruling party in the State is taken seriously by a section of people and political parties. Bidi and sada are substances that, according to experts, lead to cancer. This act on the part of the ruling party in the State, according to circles concerned, shows that it is not at all concerned at the situation of cancer in Assam and other States in the Northeast.

In a statement issued to the press today, State BJP spokesperson Rupam Goswami said: “How come the ruling party in the State distribute bidi and sada among the audience at the rally yesterday with blithe disregard to the Anti-Tobacco Act that prohibits smoking in public places. This act on the part of the ruling party shows that the Congress can stoop to any low just to get power.”
