Assam government to issue periodic land pattas to 33,000 indigenous landless people

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: Soon after coming to light that the State has indigenous landless people in lakhs, the government of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had set the target of providing land pattas to one lakh landless by this fiscal. Though the target has not been fully achieved, the process has already started.

For the second time in this fiscal, the State government is going to issue periodic land pattas and allotment certificates to around 33,000 indigenous landless people in various districts across the State on Tuesday. The State Revenue and Disaster Management Department has made all arrangements for the massive distribution of periodic land pattas and allotment certificates to the indigenous landless people based on the reports sent to it by the respective deputy commissioners. Earlier in this fiscal, around 12,000 indigenous landless people were given periodic pattas and allotment certificates by the State government. The issuance of periodic land pattas and allotment certificates to around 45,000 landless people of the State can be counted as something tangible on this front in this fiscal.

On Tuesday, while the Chief Minister is going to distribute 3,009 allotment certificates and 1,504 periodic pattas to some 4,513 indigenous landless people in Majuli district — the cultural nerve centre in the State — other ministers will distribute such land documents to other indigenous landless people in other districts of the State. Thousands of people being landless in Majuli, famous for the Vaishnavite xatras in the State, is something that makes people raise their eyebrows.

Sources in the State Revenue and Disaster Management Department claim that never before in the history of the department such a large number of periodic land pattas and allotment certificates were given in a single day.
