Assam NRC (National Register of Citizenship) Seva Kendras look Deserted

Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI: Once teeming with officials and workers, NRC seva kendras in the State look desolate and bereft now even as rejection letters are yet to be handed over to the over 19 lakh NRC ineligible applicants in the State. The two officials – an LRCR (Local Register of Citizens Registration) and a local officer – manning each of the 2,500 National Register of Citizenship seva kendras in the State are having a harrowing time now as they have to do everything themselves, right from the jobs of fourth grade employees employed there earlier.

Even before the start of the National Register of Citizenship update work, it was in mid-2015 when the 2,500 National Register of Citizenship seva kendras were formed in the State as NRC facilitating centres. Such centres played a crucial role at the grassroots level in the NRC update process. The final NRC was published on August 31, 2019 but the rejection letters have not been given to the over 19 lakh National Register of Citizenship ineligible applicants as yet. With the withdrawal of over 50 per cent of people manning NRC seva kendras, such centres are almost defunct now. The withdrawal of staff have disarrayed the National Register of Citizenship seva kendras that still have many important documents, right from the applications of National Register of Citizenship applicants in them. While Wipro, which was authorized to look after all IT-related works in the NRC update exercise, has withdrawn its data entry operators from the NRC seva kendras, the authority concerned has withdrawn all senior assistants and fourth grade employees from the kendras.

Meanwhile, the National Register of Citizenship authority has notified recently that it is not going to relieve the LRCRs from the NRC seva kendras.
