GUWAHATI: In a major breakthrough the Assam Police have arrested three hardcore cadres of the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) – an Islamic terrorist organization mainly operating in Bangladesh – from Barpeta district.

“Assam Police was keeping a watch on JMB’s activities for a long time. We increased our surveillance in view of the Independence Day on August 15. We got specific information regarding whereabouts of three cadres and accordingly conducted raids at different places in Barpeta district since Tuesday night,” Robin Kumar, SP of Barpeta said.

The police first conducted a raid at Bhawanipur in Barpeta district on Monday night and arrested a hardcore JMB cadre Hafizur Rehman from there. The police seized a country-made revolver and four live rounds from him.

“Following Hafizur’s arrest, we conducted a raid on Tuesday and arrested two trained JMB cadres, Sariful Islam and Yaqub Ali, from Koyakuchi area here,” the SP said. Kumar said all three cadres underwent training under the leadership of a top JMB leader in West Bengal before 2014 Burdwan blast.

On the other hand, the police on Wednesday arrested a suspected JMB leader Hanif Miya near Dhaligaon in Chirang district.

Recently, a team of Assam Police officials left for Kolkata to interrogate Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) militant Abdul Matin and seek his custody.

Based on a joint operation by the West Bengal Police Special Task Force and the Kerala police on Friday, Abdul Matin was arrested for his alleged involvement in Burdwan Blast case in the year 2014. Matin who hails from Barpeta district in Assam, was arrested from Kerala’s Mallapuram area. He became a JMB member in 2010 when he was studying at a madrasa.

Matin received training in making IEDs and was involved in the making of IEDs, claim officers. He was one of the 15 persons who has imparted arms training in Simulia madrasa in Burdwan district. Director-General of Police Kuladhar Saikia told reporters on Saturday that a team of officials will leave for Kolkata to interrogate Abdul Matin. He said if required the Assam Police might seek Matin’s custody.
