Assamese definition: Intellectuals meet Speaker

“Hopefully, a fil decision on the issue will be taken in the March 29 meeting, in which all organizations concerned are invited”

GUWAHATI, March 25: On the filization of the Assamese definition issue, a group of intellectuals met Speaker Prab Kumar Gogoi at the Assembly on Wednesday.

The group comprised of intellectuals and jourlists like Kak Sen Deka, Dr Nirmal Kumar Chowdhury, Deben Dutta, Lakhith Tamuli, Prafulla Pran Mahanta, Baikuntha th Goswami, ni Gopal Mahanta, Adhip Phukan, Akhil Ranjan Dutta and Utpal Baruah.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, Nirmal Kumar Chowdhury said, “The definition of the word Assamese should be filized on the basis of the Assam Accord implementation. We have given a written suggestion on this issue to the Speaker.”

Chowdhury said, “When the Constitution of India was accepted, the people, who have been living in Assam by generations since then, can be considered as Assamese.”

The intellectual group also urged the Speaker that no indigenous community in the State get sentimentally hurt while implementing the Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.

Speaker Prab Kumar Gogoi, after the meeting, also told reporters that the intellectual group had given some constructive suggestions on the fixing of the Assamese definition.

“Hopefully, a fil decision on the issue will be taken in the March 29 meeting, in which all organizations concerned are invited," he said, adding, "On either March 30 or March 31, I will place it in the House for passing so that it can be sent to the Government of India for its approval.”
