Bodo Peace Accord: All Bodo Students' Union to focus on the development

KOKRAJHAR: While welcoming the historic Bodo Peace Accord, the special convention of the All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU) at the Gwjwn Fwthar in Tamulpur of Baksa district on Thursday resolved to indefinitely suspend all forms of Bodoland movement and other activities of agitations and focus in activities aimed at the uplift of the society. It also appealed to the Government of India for initiating immediate steps to bring home all the members of NDFB (National Democratic Front of Bodoland) and some civilians from the custody of foreign countries. The mammoth meet also sought the Central government's initiative to withdraw the cases registered against some of them in foreign lands. The historic Memorandum of Settlement (MOS) was signed with the Governments of India and Assam by the ABSU, UBPO (United Bodo People's Organization) and all factions of NDFB on the January 27, 2020.

The meeting also appealed to the Governments of India and Assam to implement all the clauses of the accord as early as possible with a time-bound action plan to develop the Bodos and other communities educationally, socially, economically and politically residing under the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and the Boro Kochari Welfare Council in Assam.

The meeting also urged the Governments of India and Assam to take initiative politically and immediately implement Clause 9.4 of the MOS and withdraw all criminal (heinous as well as non-heinous) cases against all members of the NDFB factions as early as possible through the procedure established by law. The convention also urged the Governments to immediately implement Clause 9.2 of the BTR Accord, and provide rehabilitation to all the NDFB members.

The ABSU meet also relieved Pramod Boro from the president's post of the organization and inducted one of the vice presidents, Dipen Boro of Udalguri as the new president of the Union till the next conference slated in January 2021. The convention also relieved ABSU vice president Romeo P Narzary and secretary Mantu Baro from the organization. The other two vice presidents namely Jayanta Basumatary will be the speaker and Sunilal Basumatary the vice president of ABSU till its January 2021 conference.

Former ABSU president Promod Boro had taken retirement from the student's organization on February 12 after heading ABSU for 10 years. Talking to reporters, Promod Boro said that he will dedicate his life to the development of society. Stating that his tenure has come to an end, Boro told reporters, "Now I'll utilize my time to work with the masses."

Earlier in the morning, outgoing ABSU president Promod Boro hoisted the student organization's flag. While delivering his last speech as ABSU president, Promod Boro became sentimental. At the same time, the ABSU activists and well wishers including the general masses also seen shedding tears. Boro also cried for some moment hugging the pole of the ABSU flag.

The open meeting was addressed among others also by the president of NDFB (P) Gabinda Basumatary and the general secretary of NDFB (S) BR Ferenga in the presence of former Rajya Sabha MP Urkhao Gwra Brahma.
