Cabinet nods for compulsory learning of Assamese language in schools

GUWAHATI: The State Council of Ministers has paved the way for compulsory learning of the Assamese language up to Class-X by approving the Assam Language Learning Bill, 2020. Now the Bill will be placed in the current Budget session. After the Assembly passes the Bill, all the private schools in the State will have to teach Assamese as a subject up to Class-X. Some relaxations have been made in with respect to the Barak Valley and the BTAD areas.

The Council of Ministers met here on Saturday and approved a number of important Bills. The Assam Elementary and Secondary School Teachers (Regulation and Transfer) Bill, 2020 was also approved. When this Bill will get its passage in the ongoing Budget session, no teacher will be able to apply for transfers before completing 10 years of service from the date of appointment.

The Council of Ministers also approved four other Bills regarding the setting up of an autonomous council each for Kamatapur, the Mottocks, the Morans and the Bodo Kacharis.

The meeting also approved the Guwahati Building Bylaws, besides making the Chief Minister's Easy Housing Scheme automatic for G+2 constructions. It further approved construction of houses even on "four lessas" of land.
