Centre should hold talks with ULFA-I with dignity: AASU

Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI: The AASU (All Assam Students’ Union) has said that it wants the Centre to hold political and meaningful talks with the ULFA-I (United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent) with dignity.

Talking to The Sentinel on the issue on Sunday, AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said, “The issue of talks with the ULFA-I comes off and on, but without the issue being materialized. Talks with the ULFA-I shouldn’t be for the sake of talks. It should be a meaningful political dialogue with dignity. We want peace, and as such favour result-oriented talks with the ULFA-I. The Centre should show goodwill for a solution to the ULFA issue.”

Such a statement from the AASU came against the backdrop of ULFA’s ‘commander-in-chief’ Paresh Baruah making a statement recently that his outfit is ready for talks with the government if the issue of sovereignty is discussed.

After the statement from Paresh Baruah, State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma went on record saying that the State government would convey to the Prime Minister of the ULFA’s interest for peace talks during his Kokrajhar visit on February 7.
