BY OUR STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, January 16: The Assam State Election Commission on Friday preponed the date of civic elections from February 10 to February 9. The date of counting has also been preponed by the Election Commission from February 13 to February 12.

The decision to prepone both election and counting dates were taken by the Election Commission after a memorandum was submitted by the ruling Congress in the State. The memorandum stated that the Delhi Assembly election results, which would be announced on February 10, would cast an impact on results of the civic polls in the State and requested the Election Commission to change the date of polling in the State.

The Election Commission made its decision public at an all party meeting held at the Commission. The issue of poll code of conduct was also discussed in the all party meeting.

The dates of rest of poll programmes would remain the same, the State Election Commission added.
