STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday rushed to New Delhi to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hold discussion on several urgent issues including fresh movement against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019, possible adverse implications of Naga Peace agreement in Assam, proposed move to privatize Numaligarh Refinery Ltd and construction of big dams.

As per the official schedule Sonowal will meet the Prime Minister on Wednesday. The visit of the Chief Minister has assumed significance as the pressure groups such as All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Axom Xahitya Xabha (AXX) as well the Opposition have demanding Sonowal’s direct intervention on issues of CAB, privatization of NRL and construction of big dams.

The AASU has already started a fresh movement against the CAB. Leaders of the students’ union have demanded bold steps from Sonowal to withdraw the CAB.

The AXX, the highest literary and AASU have demanded direct intervention of the Chief Minister to prevent the Centre to privatize the NRL. Since the NRL is an outcome of the historic Assam Accord, the AXX has sent a formal letter to Sonowal seeking his role to convince the Centre to withdraw the move of privatizing the refinery.

With the Naga Peace agreement is at the final stage of signing between the Centre & NSCN (IM), there are apprehension and fear among the people of Assam about possible infringement of territorial integrity of the State by the peace agreement. Sonowal will seek an assurance from the Prime Minister that the Naga Peace agreement does not go against interest of Assam.

Sonowal will discuss the issues of construction of big dams and rehabilitation of surrendered NDFB militants.
