Complete verification by Feb, urges CM

NRC UPDATE

GUWAHATI, Dec 29: Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday urged that the verification process of the ongoing NRC update exercise should be completed by February 2016.

In a meeting to take stock of the NRC update process held at the conference room of the Chief Minsiter’s Office (CMO) in Assam Secretariat, Gogoi emphasised on early completion of NRC update process. The CM also urged upon the concerned authority to ensure inclusion of all genuine Indian citizens and take adequate steps so that no foreigner finds a place in the NRC.

State NRC Coorditor Prateek Hajela informed the Chief Minister that the State government has extended full support and assistance to the NRC exercise and that the officials deputed are working sincerely for timely completion of the works.

Meanwhile, the All Assam Students’ Union on Tuesday slammed Union Exterl Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj for her purported comment during a public rally in Silchar, in which she is said to have made the committment that the Union government ‘will take all necessary measures to ensure settlement of foreigners who came to Assam after 1971 in Assam itself’. Denouncing Swaraj, the AASU has vowed that it will never tolerate such a move by the Centre at any cost.
