Congress, AIUDF Stage Walkout Over NRC, CAB Issues

GUWAHATI: The winter session of the Assam Legislative Assembly on Thursday started with noisy scenes over the issues of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) with the Opposition staging walkout from the House and demonstrating in the corridor of the Assembly.

The uproar started after the Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) demanded an adjournment of the Question Hour and also a discussion on the CAB and the NRC. Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami, however, refused to adjourn the Question Hour as it would go against the rules of the House. He, however, said the Opposition could raise the issue after the Question Hour. The Opposition MLAs remained adamant on their demands and staged a walkout shouting slogans and displaying placards.
