Congress, BJP indulge in war of words

GUWAHATI, April 26: It seems that the Congress and the BJP are now in a war of words. With the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Anjan Dutta on Monday announcing action against all those who were ‘involved in secret killings, deceit and loot of public money’, and State BJP spokesperson Rupam Goswami countering Dutta on Tuesday, the exchange of fire is now rapid among the two parties.

Soon after Rupam Goswami levelled a counter allegation against APCC president Anjan Dutta on Tuesday, APCC’s senior spokesperson Ramen Barthakur called a press conference to counter Goswami.

In a firing salvo at the BJP leader, Barthakur said that the people of the State are aware of Goswami’s past. He alleged that some people also allege that Goswami was ‘safeguarding’ black marketers as the secretary of Kamrup Chambers of Commerce.

“Failing to clear his stand on the allegations levelled by the APCC president, the BJP spokesperson is now beating around the bush. We dare him to bring on record if there is a single case against Anjan Dutta in any police station of the State,” Barthakur said.

He added, “It was Anjan Dutta who first raised the issue of oil theft in the Assam Assembly on April 29, 2004 and urged the government to initiate a CBI inquiry.”

Questioning if all turns pure to the soul after joining the BJP, Barthakur asked, “Are those who were involved secret killings, murder, loot and deceit, including the SULFAs, turned pure after they contested as BJP candidates or of its allies?” He urged the BJP to make its stand clear on it.

Further stating that Bangladesh-based Jamatul Mujahideen member and an accused of Bhardwan blast Shahanur Alam’s wife and father-in-law was bbed from the residence of BJP leader Bijan Mahajan, Brathakur said, “The BJP’s allegation that Congress is working as a sleeper cell of the Jehadis is a laughable allegation. People will judge who is sheltering Jehadis and who is working as a sleeper cell.”
