Guwahati, July 14: “Impressed” by the initiatives taken by the new Sarbanda Sonowal government in the last one and half months, Congress MLA from Baithalangso Dr Man Singh Rangpi has resigned from his party and is set to join the BJP. Rangpi has also resigned as a member of the Assembly and his resigtion has been accepted by Speaker Ranjit Kumar Das. “The Congress is directionless now. Persons like me want to serve the people, but there is no leadership in the party which can guide you properly. Also, I am impressed by the initiatives taken by Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal in the last one and half months,” Rangpi said. Karbi Anglong has four constituencies and Rangpi was the lone Congress MLA in the district. Rangpi was part of the then dissident camp in Congress led by Himanta Biswa Sarma, but had not quit the party then. Reacting to his resigtion, Opposition leader Debabrat Saikia said, “The people of Baithanglaso LAC elected Dr. Mansingh Rongpi twice and I believe his re-election in 2016, in spite of the promises of ‘parivartan’ by BJP, was proof that he was able to do good as a Congress MLA”.
