Congress raises pitch for Acharya's ouster

By Our Staff Reporter

Guwahati, Nov 27: Thousands of Congress activists on Friday marched from the Soram Field to the office of the Kamrup (metro) deputy commissioner pressing for removal of Governor PB Acharya. The rally brought traffic to a standstill at that stretch for several hours.

Led by State party president Anjan Dutta, the Congress activists submitted a memorandum to President Prab Mukherjee, through the DC, demanding Acharya's immediate removal "for acting and discharging functions like an RSS/ BJP agent".

The party reminded that it had made the demand in June this year, but no step has been taken. "Even after that, the Governor has come under political controversies several times," the memorandum said.

The Congress said the Governor's "Hindustan for Hindus" remark has had serious repercussions across the country, inviting protests from several parties. "Such irresponsible remark can create hatred between Hindus, Muslims and other communities. The statement is an insult to the Constitution of India and a threat to secularism, the basic foundation of India's unity and culture," it said.
