'Declare Miyans as indigenous Assamese'

GUWAHATI, May 4: The Asom-Miyan (Asomiyan) Parisahd said that the statements being made on the NRC update work by various political parties in the state make it crystal clear that they have their own political intentions.

Talking to newsmen at Dispur Press Club  today, Parishad president MG Hazarika said: “The BJP is bent on giving Indian citizenship to Hindus in Assam from Bangladesh, if need be, by bringing amendment to the Constitution. AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal, on the other hand, doesn’t hesitate to make extremely commul comments for, what he said, Indian citizenship to 40 lakh Muslims, who, according to him, may not find any berth in the ‘updated NRC’. He is out to garner Muslim votes by stirring up the religious sentiment, and thereby pushing the Hindus towards the BJP. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi also made it clear that Bangladeshi Hindus who are in Assam will be given Indian citizenship. All such diverse views have made it clear that they have their own party’s purpose to serve.”

Hazarika said: “We’re against such statements that are politically motivated. Our demand before the Congress and the AIUDF is that they should declare the Miyans of Asom as indigenous Assamese. During NRC update work, magistrates should accompany the teams. We’re in favour of NRC update.”

On May 26 the Parishad is going to stage a strike in Guwahati demanding NRC update in the state.
