GUWAHATI, March 17:  A person, who was declared an illegal migrant by a Foreigners Tribul and presently working as a cook at cabinet minister zrul Islam’s residence, was today given the “certificate” of Indian citizenship by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

Saidul Islam was declared a foreigner by a Foreigners Tribul at Morigaon in June 2014. It was stated that he migrated from Mymensingh district of Bangladesh after March 25, 1971. The verdict has been challenged at the Gauhati High Court which is currently hearing the matter.

Islam claims to be a resident of Kadamtali Gaon in Morigaon district. He is working as a cook at minister zrul Islam’s quarters in Dispur.

“It is false. The minister (zrul Islam) will prove that he is an Indian citizen,” Chief Minister Gogoi said when asked about the controversy surrounding Saidul’s citizenship credentials.

Gogoi also indicated that “may be” the Tribul which pronounced Saidul a foreigner did not have enough evidence in support of his citizenship claims. “His father’s me was in the tiol Register of Citizens,” Gogoi claimed.

The Chief Minister’s virtual clean chit to the suspect tiol has invited the wrath of many organizations.

“The Chief Minister has no right to pronounce anyone an Indian citizen. It is a new tactic of the Chief Minister to shield illegal migrants,” AASU advisor Sammujal Bhattacharyya said.

Reacting sharply, State BJP president Siddhartha Bhattacharyya said when the issue is in the court, the Chief Minister has no right or authority to say anything about it.

The Assam State Committee of the BJP said that it has been proved yet again that the Bangladeshis staying illegally in Assam are the beloved of Congress ministers.

“The issue proves once again that illegal migrants have been entering Assam at the behest of the Congress,” State BJP spokesman Rupam Goswami said, adding that the Governor and Union Home ministry have been apprised of the development with a plea seeking intervention. In a statement, the State BJP also demanded sacking and arrest of Minister zrul Islam.

Earlier, Minister zrul Islam, accused of sheltering the suspected Bangladeshi tiol at his residence, had claimed that the individual was an Indian citizen. “He and his father – all were born here,” the Minister had claimed.
