Declared Bangladeshis Enrolled in NRC: Assam Public Work (APW)

GUWAHATI: Assam Public Work (APW), an NGO on Tuesday alleged that the recently published final NRC had enrolled names of individuals who were earlier identified as Bangladeshis.

A press release issued by the APW stated that it was a matter of grave concern that some people who had been identified and announced as Bangladeshis earlier have been included in the final NRC along with names of their family members. On other hand, the indigenous people and sons of the soil are struggling to enroll their names in the NRC, the release said.

“The Koches, Rabhas, Ahoms, Rajbongshis, Bodos, Tiwas, Misings, Karbis and Deuris had to stand in queues beside illegal intruders coming from Bangladesh before various NRC Sewa Kendras to enroll their names in the NRC. This is pathetic and cannot be accepted. Why do the indigenous people have to appear before the Foreigners’ Tribunals to include their names in the final NRC,” the release said. The release further feared that those illegal Bangladeshis whose names were included in the final NRC, would engage themselves in spreading religious fundamentalism and terrorist activities across the State. It demanded an investigation by the NIA to find out as to how could the illegal Bangladeshis manage to enroll their names in the final NRC.

The APW has also demanded an inquiry by the Enforcement Directorate into alleged financial anomalies in the entire exercise to update the NRC.
