Defamation suits threatened

Our Staff Reporter

Guwahati, Jan 27: BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma and AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal have threatened to file defamation cases against Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. Sarma said he is planning to file another Rs 100-crore defamation suit against Gogoi within a week for the Chief Minister's allegation that he mediated with the AIUDF for an alliance with the Congress ahead of 2011 assembly polls. Gogoi last week also appeared before a court in connection with a defamation suit filed by Sarma.  Ajmal, on the other hand, has taken umbrage at Gogoi's statement in which he equated the AIUDF with the RSS, alleging that both organizations have the same kind of strategy to polarize the electorate on religious lines. Ajmal has set a deadline of seven days for the CM to withdraw the statement.
